22 December 2004 - Transnuclear, Inc., an Areva subsidiary, is to supply a dry storage system to the Monticello nuclear generating plant in the USA. It will be the fifth Nuclear Management Company (NMC) plant it serves.
Transnuclear will supply the dual-purpose Nuhoms-61BT spent fuel storage system. The initial order of canisters and modules will be delivered in early 2008, while the first fuel loading is scheduled for late 2008.
Monticello is the fifth NMC site that Transnuclear has provided the dry storage facilities for. Four of the sites use Nuhoms including Point Beach, Palisades, Duane Arnold and now Monticello. The fifth site, Prairie Island, uses Transnuclear's TN40 metal cask, with seventeen casks loaded to date.
Transnuclear stated the three sites that already use the Nuhoms system have seen a smooth transition from their previous systems. Point Beach and Palisades set new pool-to-pad record cycle times after switching from a vertical concrete cask system.
