Duke looks long-term as spot market falters

9 December 2004 - Brazilian power generator Duke Paranapanema will use all of its installed capacity to meet sales contracts for 2005 in a strategic move away from the spot market.

Brazil's second largest privately owned generator, Duke Paranapanema, the Brazilian unit of US power company Duke Energy, sold 15 000 GWh at the government's power auction at 59.98 reais/MWh ($21.79). This is three times the price of the spot market, which in comparison was trading at just over 18 reais/MWh.

The move follows a previous statement from the company which said that investments in new power generation capacity are on hold because of market and regulatory uncertainties.

The company has power available for sale in 2007 and 2008 that it hopes to sell through bilateral contracts or in future auctions. The government is planning to hold another power auction at the end of March 2005.
