FENOC awards Westinghouse RVH contract

19 November 2004 - FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) has awarded Westinghouse a contract for replacement reactor vessel head (RVH) installation and upgrade services for Beaver Valley Unit 1 in Shippingport, Pa., USA.

The contract award is in addition to earlier awards to Westinghouse for replacement RVH hardware and replacement control rod drive mechanism housings. The RVH upgrade is intended to reduce the time required for reactor vessel disassembly and re-assembly in support of plant refuelling.

Other benefits expected of the upgrade include reduced risks to personnel, a significant reduction in radiation exposure, improvements in equipment reliability, and reduced polar crane demand.

The replacement RVH and upgrades will be installed during a refuelling outage in early 2006. Financial terms were not disclosed.
