China grid co forecasts tight supply into 2005

10 November 2004 - China is forecasting that the shortage of electricity in its power grid will continue into next year, according to an official from the State Power Grid Company.

2004 will see the greatest strain on the grid. The power supply in the last quarter will be 11 million kW short of demand, mainly in East, North and South China.

It is estimated that power consumption in 2004 would rise by about 14.5 per cent or even higher.

Experts here predicted that the power demand would grow 10-14 per cent and power shortage next year would be less than this year as 50 million kW of power capacity would go into
operation.

Power demand and supply would not strike a general balance until 2006, when power demand would grow 8-12 per cent and 70 million kW of generating capacity would be put into operation. Power demand and supply would be basically balanced in 2007,
when power demand would grow 6-9 per cent and another 50 million kW generating capacity would be put into operation.
