Indian ministers seek Dabhol solution

27 October 2004 - India's influential Group of Ministers are reported to have discussed the future of the stalled Dabhol power project at a meeting held on Tuesday in a bid to find a way of reviving the $3bn venture.

The 2184 MW power plant has not generated electricity for three years and is at the centre of a legal wrangle between investors. Lead investor, Enron Corporation, pulled the plug on the plant of a dispute involving government guarantees. Promoters GE and Bechtel have made claims totalling about $6bn and the same are being heard by an International Tribunal in London.

The Finance Ministry had earlier provided an estimate of about $394m to be invested to restart generation of power at the plant, sources said, adding that this was also discussed by the Group of Ministers.
