Utility applications to be delivered via BPL

26 October 2004 - Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek), have announced the commercial implementation of Broadband Over Power Line (BPL) applications for utilities.

Joseph E. Fergus, president and CEO of COMTek said, "COMTek's BPL network revolutionises the operation of utilities by bringing intelligence and total visibility to the electric grid."

The applications include transformer and customer-level outage notification, demand-side management (DSM), automated meter reading (AMR), security video surveillance and traffic signal automation, all currently running on COMTek's commercial BPL network in Virginia, USA.

In a recently issued statement, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) chairman, Patrick Wood III said, "This technology holds tremendous potential, not just in providing new avenues for communication services, but in helping electricity systems operate more efficiently and reliably."
