Siemens secures orders for four power plant projects in China

25 October 2004 - In a consortium with Shanghai Electric Corporation (SEC), Siemens Power Generation (PG) has secured orders worth €210m ($265m) to supply nine gas turbines for four combined cycle power plants in China.

Purchasers are four Chinese utilities. The gas turbine delivery dates for the natural gas-fired combined cycle plants are scheduled for the second half of 2005.

Worldwide China is the power plant market with the highest growth rate. Together with its Chinese joint venture partners Siemens has the lead there in large-capacity, advanced steam power plants. In the last ten years Siemens has equipped 17 power plants in China with a combined capacity of more than 14 GW. Siemens instrumentation and control systems have been successfully deployed in over 60 Chinese power plants.

"As part of our Twelve-Point Programme for Profit and Growth in China, we are targeting the good growth prospects in the power sector. Only a few weeks ago we posted two orders for long-term service agreements. With this recent success, we now have also made an entry into the Chinese gas turbine market", stated Klaus Voges, President of Siemens Power Generation.

PG will supply six V94.3A-gas turbines for three combined cycle power plants at the Zhengzhou, Xiaoshan and Zhongyuan locations. Each of the plants comprising two gas turbine engines will have a capacity of 700 MW In Shidongkou, three Siemens V94.3A-gas turbines will be deployed in three combined-cycle units. The capacity of this plant will be 1050 MW.

"By virtue of their high efficiency levels and low emissions, combined cycle power plants will play an important role in the Chinese power market," said Voges. "We will transfer manufacturing technology to our partner SEC in Shanghai and we will be forming a new joint venture to manufacture the hot-gas-path parts of our most advanced gas turbines. As part of this joint venture, technology transfer is also planned", said Voges.
