GE and Doosan supply steam turbines for Korean expansion

20 October 2004 - GE and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. are to supply six steam turbine generators for the expansions of coal fired power plants in Korea. When completed the projects will add more than 3000 MW of new capacity to the Korean power grid.

The new GE model G12 machines are being jointly designed and manufactured by GE and Doosan, under a long-term agreement between the two.

GE will handle most of the design at its facilities in New York and they will also provide installation, technical assistance and training services. Doosan will handle the majority of manufacturing and will also provide site installation services.

The steam turbines will be highly efficient, ultra-supercritical fossil units, with a nominal output of 520 MW to 550 MW. The generators are water-cooled machines.

GE will manufacture its equipment in its facilities in Maine, US, while Doosan will manufacture its equipment in Changwon, Korea. The equipment is due to be shipped over the next two to three years, with commercial start-ups ranging from late 2005 to 2008.
