20 October 2004 - Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) has signed an €180m ($220m) contract to supply five district network control centres to General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL). The contract, signed on Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's recent visit to Libya, is the largest so far received by the power systems control segment of the Siemens group.
From next year, Siemens will install new turnkey network control centres in the regions of Tobruk, Benghazi, Tripoli, Zawia and Sebha.
The five network control centres will make their contribution by taking in all the information on the operating state of the grid. For this, remote terminal units (RTUs) will be installed in the 66/30/11 kV substations in the regions and integrated into the switchgear. Information gathered by the RTUs and transmitted commands will be exchanged via a communication network (also forming part of the order) with power system control centres.
The power system control equipment is based on software developments of the Sinaut Spectrum range, produced by Siemens PTD. Switching operations will be performed from a main control room, enabling better reaction to system disturbances and avoiding the risk of blackouts.
The control centres are scheduled for commissioning in early 2008. Libya is aiming to link up the Libyan grid with the UCTE European interconnected network in the years ahead.
