19 October 2004 - Origin energy, one of Australia's largest electricity retailers, today announced plans for a $A1bn ($723m) gas fired power station. The plant, to be built in Warrnambool in western Victoria, would be supplied with recently discovered gas from the Otway basin off Victoria's south west coast via a 78 km underground pipeline.
The state's environment minister and acting premier John Thwaites welcomed the announcement and said the new plant would boost the state's power generating capacity by 12 per cent.
It is a step away from the brown coal stations in Victoria's southeast toward a cleaner solution as the gas fired generator will produce energy with 70 per cent less greenhouse gasses.
Origin Energy's Victorian director Tony Wood said planning for the 1000 MW station near Mortlake would take two years and, if approved, construction would take a further two years.
If given the go ahead, the power station would create 300 jobs when construction begins in 2006 and 30 permanent jobs when it starts generating electricity by 2008.
