Hyundai orders control systems from Metso Automation for Saudi Cogen plants

18 October 2004 - Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of Seoul Korea has awarded Metso Automation, an order for four maxDNA distributed control systems that will control the electric and steam production at four co-generation plants in Saudi Arabia.

The four plants; Uthmaniyah, Shedgum, Ras Tanura, and Ju'aymah are located in eastern Saudi Arabia near Al Khobar. The plants will be operated at base load year-round, providing electricity and high pressure steam. A portion of the electricity will be consumed by the processing facility. Electricity not consumed locally will be transmitted across the national grid by Saudi Aramco for consumption at other Saudi Aramco facilities.

HHI is the plant subcontractor. It will supply two combustion turbines, two HRSGs, a 4 by 4 air-cooled condenser, plant auxiliaries, and a maxDNA control system for each of the four plant sites. Each plant will have two GE PG7241FA Gas-fired gas turbine generators, each capable of producing 156 MW, two HRSG's, each capable of producing about 625 000 pounds per hour of high pressure steam at 650 psig, excluding supplementary firing capacity. The HRSG's will be equipped with duct burners to meet the supplementary steam supply requirements dispatched by Saudi Aramco.

Liquified natural gas provided by Saudi Aramco will fuel the combustion turbines at each plant. Electrical energy from the generators will be returned to Aramco through a 230 kV switchyard at each plant and steam from the HRSGs will be consumed by Aramco's refinery process. The combined electrical output of the four plants will be 1100 MWe.

Each maxDNA distributed control system will control the HRSG and auxiliary duct firing when needed. It will command the combustion turbines through a GSM link, and monitor devices in the local switchyard. It will also collect and archive information that will be used to manage the performance of the plant. Another computer will link each plant to a centralized performance-monitoring centre operated by International Power, the developer, and operator of the four plants.

Metso Automation's unit in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA will provide USA manufactured hardware. Metso Automation India will provide special applications, training, and commissioning services. HHI will be responsible for system configuration, installation and final integrated testing with the plant's primary elements.

Deliveries of the systems are scheduled at various times during 2005 with each plant being commissioned in 2006.
