13 October 2004 - VA Tech Hydro has been awarded the contract for the retrofit of the existing Balch power station in California, USA.
The contract is a retrofit of the existing 80-year old station and sees VA Tech Hydro, the Austrian suppliers of equipment and services for hydropower plants, supply Pacific Gas & Electricity (PG&E) with two new MicroGuss Pelton type runners including coupling elements as well as needle tips and seat rings.
The contract, worth almost €1m ($1.2m), is the first major PG&E contract for VA Tech Hydro. Once commissioned, the new Pelton type runners will be able to produce an output of almost 17 MW each.
VA Tech's MicroGuss technology is a fabrication method for Pelton runners developed by VA Tech Hydro employing forged material in high stressed zones.
The technology has been chosen in recent hydropower projects in countries such as Norway and Canada and VA Tech's customer feedback states that the upgraded unit efficiency has been much higher than many new Pelton units measured in the past.
Also today, VA Tech announced an 11 per cent increase in order intake and record order backlog of €4.8bn in its half-year results.
Speaking at a press conference in Vienna, Klaus Sernetz, the new VA Tech chairman stated that the results were characterised by generally positive developments. Sernetz went on to stress that, "The task now is to implement the additional measures needed to guarantee a lasting turnaround in the group. Therefore the priority for 2004 is the completion of restructuring within the group."
