$1.2bn invested to link KSA, Kuwait and Bahrain's power grids

13 October 2004 - The cost for the first phase of a GCC project to link electric grids of each of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain has reached $1.2bn, GCC Assistant Secretary-General for economic affairs Mohammad Bin Obeid Al-Mazroie has announced.

The project's second phase, which links the UAE and Oman, and the third which links the two previous parts altogether will follow, he added. The official told reporters following meetings of the GCC water and electricity cooperation committees here that all relevant memorandums have been approved during the meetings and the recommendations will be refereed to the GCC summit scheduled in December 2004 in Bahrain. It was approved, he added, that the Saudi Arabian Jubail Water centre will be a house of experience for GCC countries, and be assigned to conduct research relating to water projects in the GCC countries.

The programme on comprehensive management and sustainable development of water and a strategic document on water policies have been also approved, he said. He also told reporters that the GCC General Secretariat will also launch a joint media campaign to aware the public on the importance of economizing water and power consumption.
