VA Tech Hydro to refurbish Swift

12 October 2004 - VA Tech Hydro, a company of the listed VA Tech, has been awarded the Swift No.2 Power Plant refurbishment project by Public Utility District (PUD) No.1 of Cowlitz County, Washington, USA.

The plant, originally constructed in the late 1950's, was severely damaged in April 2002 by a breach of the Swift No.2 Power Canal, directly adjacent to the powerhouse.

VA Tech Hydro, a supplier of equipment and services for hydropower plants, will be responsible for the complete electro-mechanical refurbishment package for the powerhouse.

Work under the contract includes the refurbishment of two 35 MW Francis turbines, including the replacement of the runners, as well as two digital governors, static exciters, restacking and rewinding of the generators, and the complete balance of the plant.

Franz Strohmer, member of the board of VA Tech Hydro, said: "In a challenging project schedule, the plant will return to full operation in September 2005 when it will supply about 5 per cent of the PUD's power requirements."
