GE 6FA for Indian plant extension

6 October 2004 - Bharat Heavy Electricals, Ltd. (BHEL) of Hyderabad, India will supply a GE Frame 6FA gas turbine and additional equipment for the Dhuvuran Power Project Phase-II in Gujarat, India.

The plant, an expansion of an existing facility, will be owned and operated by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL).

The Frame 6FA gas turbine, capable of more than 74 MW of output in simple-cycle operation, will be fuelled by natural gas and will operate in a combined-cycle configuration to help produce a total of 112 MW for the Indian power grid.

The power plant also includes a bottoming cycle consisting of a steam turbine and corresponding heat recovery steam generator.

The gas turbine will be manufactured at GE's plant in Belfort, France, while a Speedtronic Mark VI control system and two human-machine interface systems will be produced at GE's facilities in Salem, Virginia. The equipment will be shipped in December of 2004 with commercial operation expected by May of 2005.

Bharat Heavy Electricals, the EPC contractor for this project, is also supplying the generator and accessory systems for the 6FA as well as the bottoming cycle equipment for this power plant from its factories in India.

With the second highest population and ranked as the sixth largest energy consumer in the world, India is seeking new technologies to help meet its demand for electrical power. While coal currently supplies approximately 70 per cent of the country's thermal power plants, natural gas is emerging as a preferred fuel in the power generation sector.
