S Korea's power consumption hits record in August

4 October 2004 - South Korea's electricity consumption reached a new high of 27.2 billion kilowatt-hours in August as a record heat wave led to the increased use of air conditioners, government officials said Monday.

The annual growth rate of power use in August was 12.2 per cent, the highest since January 2002, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said.

Industrial power consumption rose 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 13.8 billion kilowatt-hours in August, while general-purpose use surged 19.4 per cent to 7.2 billion kilowatt-hours.

Residential electricity consumption jumped 18.6 per cent to 4.8 billion kilowatt-hours in August from a year ago, the ministry said.
