Civil works on for UAE power grid

4 October 2004 - Civil works have got off the ground for the UAE-wide power grid and its master design is being finalised, according to a top industry official. The inter-connectivity of power supply among the seven emirates is among the more ambitious projects being undertaken in the country, which would then pave the way for integration with the GCC power grid.

"Equipment for the transmission and distribution for the UAE grid are under manufacture at our plant in France, and first shipments should start early next year," said Marco Graziano, vice-president for Middle East and Africa at Areva T&D, one of the biggest players in the category in the region.

The UAE's installed power capacity is expected to reach around 19 000 MW by 2010. It will be this capacity that the national grid project expects to inter-connect. The participation in the UAE power grid project comes on the back of other major wins with such regional utility service providers as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA).

On the status of the GCC power grid, he said: "It has taken some time to get going, but the latest update is that the financing has been decided and the tender phase will start soon. Obviously, the project is something we will be looking to involve ourselves in very closely, given our track record in the Middle East."
