Kvaerner Power wins power boiler contracts in the Americas

30 September 2004 - Kvaerner Power, part of the Aker Kvaerner group, has signed a contract of three power boilers for corn processing plant in the USA and contracts for a power boiler and modernization of an existing power boiler for two pulp mills in Chile. The orders are worth in excess of €50m ($61.5m).

"These contracts with strategic customers are again recognizing Kvaerner Power as a significant supplier of boilers to both the pulp and paper and the power generation market segments," says Lennart Ohlsson, president of Kvaerner Power.

"Kvaerner Power has acquired a strong position in the North American power generation market. These new circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler orders for Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), and our previous power boiler order for Manitowoc Public Utilities in the USA, are continuations of our track record of 25 successful coal-fired boiler plant references during the last decades in the USA."

"The new orders for the pulp mills of CMPC Celulosa S.A. in Chile strengthen our position as a major boiler supplier for the pulp and paper industry in South America, where pulp producing capacity lately has increased significantly," Mr. Ohlsson adds.

Kvaerner Power will supply three CYMIC boilers using CFB technology to combust coal to ADM in Clinton, Iowa, USA. The boilers will be ready for start-up in 2008.

ADM is a global agricultural company processing corn, oil seeds, wheat and cocoa with more than 260 processing plants, and has chosen Kvaerner Power as its technology provider several times. Since 1980, Kvaerner Power has supplied 14 coal-fired CFB boilers for ADM's different industrial locations.

The international pulp producer CMPC, a subsidiary of Empresas CMPC S.A. in Chile, has ordered a HYBEX boiler to its kraft pulp mill in Pacifico in Central Chile. The boiler will use bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology and has a thermal capacity of 75 MW. The boiler will burn biomass fuels like bark and saw dust, and it will be ready for start-up in autumn 2006. In addition to the HYBEX(r) boiler order, CMPC also ordered for its Santa Fe pulp mill a capacity increase for the existing power boiler (62 MW) which was supplied by Kvaerner Power in 1997. The boiler modernization will be completed at the end of 2005.
