UK increases solar funding

22 September 2004 - The UK government has confirmed its commitment to green energy with another tranche of funding for solar energy, towards its stated aim of building a renewables industry to rival those in Germany and Japan.

The newly appointed Energy Minister, Mike O'Brien said, "In future, energy generation will often be small scale and local. We need to change the way we think about energy. That starts at grass roots level - in our homes and communities."

It is understood that the £6m ($10.8m) of extra funding will extend the current "Major Demonstration Programme" (MDP) until the summer of 2005 when the government is expected to announce a new grant programme.
