12 August 2004 - The Marzano decree for the reorganisation of the Italian energy sector became law on 1 August 2004. This means that as from 1 July 2005 all commercial electricity customers can freely choose their electricity supplier, and households from 1 July 2007.
The law also requires owners of electricity stations of over 300 MW to pay €0.20 for every MW of electricity produced during the first seven years of operation to the region where the station is located. Of this fee, 40 per cent will be distributed to other local authorities involved, which is hoped to encourage constructions of new stations in the region.
