Malaysian Power Station Wins Award

The Perlis 650 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant has received a Bronze Award of commendation at the recent Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) Engineering Awards.

Leading consulting firm, Sinclair Knight Merz carried out the project management and owners' engineer role for the Perlis Natural Gas Fired Combined Cycle Power Plant Project, on behalf of Teknologi Tenaga Perlis Consortium Sdn. Bhd. (TTPC).

Located by the sea, just south of Kuala Perlis and near the Thai border in north-west Malaysia, the Project is based on three Alstom GT13E2 gas turbines exhausting through dual pressure heat recovery system generators (HRSG's), which provide steam to a common dual pressure steam turbine.

Sinclair Knight Merz Project Manager, David Hunter, said the Project had been successfully delivered within 21 months of financial close - one of the fastest completions ever for a project of this size - and under budget. "The Plant has a net site output of 650 MW, or 675 MW with power augmentation in the form of water injection," Mr Hunter said. "Liquid fuel can also be used," he said.

The Engineer, Procure & Construct (EPC) Contract with Alstom included a 132 kV and 275 kV switchyard, which was handed over to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) under the terms of the power purchase agreement upon completion.

All auxiliaries, cooling towers, black start diesel generators, buildings, workshop and store, along with the balance of plant were also included. Mr Hunter said the Perlis Power Plant Project has proven to be a highly successful undertaking. "We are delighted to have received this commendation," Mr Hunter said.
