American Wind Energy Association: Increased incentives to develop domestic renewable resources are a main part of the Democratic national party platform, unveiled at the convention that wrapped up on Thursday, July 29. 2004.
On energy independence, the Democratic platform supports a national goal of "producing 20% of our electricity from renewable sources such as wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and hydrogen by 2020." In addition, the platform states that, as President, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) will propose, "using existing oil and gas revenues to accelerate the development of innovative technologies, such as the more efficient cars and trucks, the development of biofuels, and creating clean, secure, hydrogen-based energy."
The platform also supports expanding the supply of natural gas, increasing the investment in "clean coal" research, and increasing energy efficiency by upgrading government offices and offering tax credits for energy-efficient buildings and houses. According to the platform, a President Kerry would propose tax incentives to help consumers buy energy-efficient cars.
At the convention, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) presented a speech specifically on the topic of a "21st Century energy plan." According to her speech, a Democratic Administration would, "invests in wind power, wave power, solar power, hydrogen power and the ingenuity of American brain power." She added, "John Kerry is going to lead our generation of Americans to energy independence."
