18 June 2004 - An important step in the creation of a competitive electricity market in Vietnam will take place on 1 July when Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) launch an internal market in which its electricity generators must compete with the parent company to sell their products.
To raise competition in electricity trading, in the first phase of the project, EVN plans to enable EVN-unaffiliated electricity generators to offer their supply directly to some specific consumers in selected areas. EVN will lease its electricity transmission lines to these power generators on the condition that they pay all costs for management, investment and distribution.
In the second phase, an electricity wholesale market will be set up, and electricity traders and major electricity consumers will be able to select suppliers.
In the final phase, a retail market will be built in which electricity generators and traders will compete together to sell their products. Consumers will be able to choose their own supplier.
In another development, the Chanthu typhoon has interrupted the supply of electricity to the central and Central Highlands provinces, especially in Binh Dinh and Quang Ngai, causing a loss of 2.3 million kWh to the EVN-affiliated Electricity Company No. 3. It also broke two transformers with a combined capacity of 430 kVA.
