Areva T&D wins €18m UK order from EDF

19 May 2004 - Areva's Transmission and Distribution division has won one of the largest single turnkey substation contracts ever awarded by EDF Energy, the UK's largest distribution network owner.

The contract, worth €18m ($21.5m), is to supply a new indoor 24-bay 132kV gas-insulated substation in the Croydon area of Greater London to replace an existing outdoor air-insulated substation.

EDF Energy is part of the substantial European energy company EDF and runs the distribution networks in London, the South-East and East of England, covering a quarter of the UK's population. It needs to replace the substation before it comes to the end of its predicted operational life in 2006.

The new substation will be installed within the existing Beddington Grid site and, once commissioned, the old substation will be dismantled and scrapped. The company favoured an indoor gas-insulated solution over a conventional one as it required much less space, cut the anticipated project time in half and provided greater system security by avoiding complex stage-by-stage works.

Kurt Hakansson, Executive Vice-President of T&D's systems business, said: "We pride ourselves on providing our customers with solutions tailored to their needs. In this case, our space-saving, compact F35 switchgear proved to be a vital component in meeting the space and time constraints of EDF Energy's project."
