30 April 2004 - The UK energy regulator Ofgem has confirmed the development of a new regulatory framework, which will remove several key barriers for distributed generators wishing to connect to local electricity distribution networks.
Distributed generation is the term used to describe the production of electricity by a large number of small-scale generators, such as micro-hydro systems and homes with solar PV panels. In the past it has been difficult for these generators to connect to the low voltage local electricity network because of various technical and bureaucratic issues. However, as part of the Government's drive to increase the amount of renewable electricity being generated in the UK, Ofgem has changed the regulatory regime in this area and announced funding support for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to improve the efficiency of their systems.
Ofgem Chairman, Sir John Mogg, noted that these changes "will help make the distribution system more efficient. [They] will also help remove the barriers and constraints faced by renewable generators wishing to connect to the distribution network."
