Poll suggests Sweden might back nuclear again

30 April 2004 - The results of an opinion poll published in Sweden's Svenska Dagbladet newspaper earlier this week indicate that more Swedes now want to keep the country's nuclear power generation industry than not.

Sweden voted in a referendum in 1980 to phase out the use of nuclear power by 2010 but the survey by Gothenburg University's SOM Institute, found 46 per cent in favour of keeping or expanding existing facilities, while 34 per cent wanted the nuclear programme to end at least when those reactors still operational reached the end of their working lives.
