Shipments to Japan nuclear reprocessing plant to resume in May

23 April 2003 - The government of Japan's Aomori Prefecture has decided on a plan to allow Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited to resume shipping spent nuclear fuel to its reprocessing plant in Rokkasho as early as May. Once such shipments start up again, work can proceed on pluthermal power generation plans and the use of the reprocessing facility as a production base for pluthermal fuel.

The decision by Aomori Prefecture is seen as a step forward in the broader effort to realize the central government's nuclear fuel cycle plan.

Aomori Prefecture suspended transportation of spent nuclear fuel to the reprocessing plant in November 2002 following a string of incidents.
