Nuclear energy may be considered for 2010 onwards

20 April 2004 - The Chilean nuclear energy commission CCEN said it would only consider nuclear power generation as a viable alternative from 2010 onwards, as the technology is evolving to a new generation of reactors more fitted to the size of the domestic market, that is, running a capacity of 300 - 380 MW.

According to estimates from CCEN nuclear power generation technology would then to have costs around $1000 per MWh, or $300m to set up a 300 MW plant. It is still far higher cost than the $500 per MWh of gas fed thermal plants, similar to the costs of hydroelectric power generating, and to coal plants.
