Indonesia and Malaysia to study interconnection

15 April 2004 - Indonesia's State-owned electricity company PLN and its Malaysian counterpart Tenaga Nasional Bernhad (TNB) agreed to jointly study development of electric interconnection between the two countries.

Under the agreement the two companies will build submarine electrical cable between Malaysian peninsula and Sumatra, a PLN executive said.

Network and Transmission Director Herman Darnel Ibrahim said the two companies would start by conducting feasibility studies to be completed in 6 months.

The feasibility studies will be a follow-up step of a memorandum of understanding already signed between the two companies earlier.

Ibrahim said the cooperation between the two state companies is part of the Asean cooperation program called Asean Power Grid that will have 11 interconnections involving the ten member countries of the regional grouping.
