Mitsui Babcock wins stake in €54.5m Nikola Tesla regeneration project

z13 April 2004 - Mitsui Babcock has been awarded a contract by elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) for Lot 2 of the Nikola Tesla A Power Plant in Serbia. The contract has been awarded as part of a €54.5m ($65.8m) major overhaul and rehabilitation of Nikola Tesla Power Plant, a project funded by the European Union and managed by the European Agency for Reconstruction.

The European Agency for Reconstruction is responsible for managing the majority of EU-funded assistance programmes in Serbia and Montenegro (including Kosovo), and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Work will start in April 2004, only weeks after the signing of contracts, to ensure completion before EPS's peak winter electrical requirements. Mitsui Babcock will install replacement pressure parts and boiler components at the 308 MW lignite boiler. A specialist team of Mitsui Babcock engineers and local subcontractors will perform an estimated 44 000 site welds to meet the return to commercial service date of December 2004.

"Following our successful involvement with the European Agency for Reconstruction in Kosovo, I am delighted that we have been awarded this contract. Our continued success in Central and Eastern Europe enhances Mitsui Babcock's presence within this strategically important, developing market," commented Ceri Green, Director of Overseas Operations at Mitsui Babcock.
