GE Jenbacher to supply gen-set to Pakistan textiles manufacturer

7 April 2004 - GE Jenbacher has been awarded a contract to supply power generation equipment to a textiles factory near Karachi, Pakistan's largest city.

The Austria-based GE Jenbacher, which is part of GE Energy, announced that it will supply Yousuf Textile Mills Ltd. with a 1 MW, JGS 320 GS-N.L (version C105) generator set. The low-emission unit, which features the DIA.NE XT management system, will use natural gas as its primary fuel source.

The generator set is designed to create more power for Yousuf Textile's factory, which is being expanded. The company manufactures and exports various products including cotton yarn. The plant is located in the 13-acre Korangi Industrial Area, 20 miles southeast of Karachi.

Karachi is the capital of the province of Sindh in southeastern Pakistan. The city is Pakistan's largest, with more than 10 million people, and serves as the country's manufacturing center.

The new generator set will be manufactured at GE Jenbacher's facilities in Jenbach, Austria and shipped to Karachi in July 2004. The equipment is expected to be installed and to begin commercial operation in September 2004.

GE Jenbacher will also provide technical services and spare parts for the project.
The new contract marks GE Jenbacher's second order from Yousuf Textile, which purchased a similar generator set in 2001.

Last month GE Jenbacher was been awarded an $8.2m contract (€6.77m) to supply six, 1.4 MW generator sets to be used at one of Italy's most powerful landfill-energy plants.

GE Jenbacher will supply AMIAT SPA with GE Jenbacher's newest generator set model, the JGS 420 GS-L.L (version A21). The six units will be used at the Basse di Stura landfill, one of Italy's largest landfills. The site is located near Turin in northwestern Italy.

The generator sets will use landfill methane gas to generate electricity, which will then be sold to the public power grid. Natural gas will be the backup power source.

Basse di Stura will also be Italy's most efficient landfill-energy project. The plant will have an electrical efficiency exceeding 41 per cent. The engines will also lower emissions by using the CL.AIR system, which allows thermal re-combustion of engine exhaust gases. The system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions to a value of less than 300 mg/NM3 (5% O2).

The turnkey project is being executed by GE Jenbacher and AB Impianti of Brescia, Italy. GE Jenbacher will supply the engines, and CL.AIR systems, as well as engine commissioning and startup services as part of a four-year maintenance contract. AB Impianti will handle engineering and civil works, as well as the MV boards, biogas transport system, container, supervision system, engine auxiliaries, plant commissioning and startup services.
