2 April 2004 - Areva's Transmission and Distribution Division (T&D) has won its biggest ever contract in the Persian Gulf region, for the construction of two high-voltage turnkey substations.
The contract, worth €124m to Areva, is with local utility Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) for the supply, installation and commissioning of two 400/132 kV gas-insulated substations at Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and Bukadra, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
The two substations are needed to supply the power necessary to keep up with the region's burgeoning economic growth. Each substation will contain 12 bays of Areva's 400kV switchgear, 22 bays of 132kV switchgear, four 450MVA transformers and two 40MVA transformers.
The contract follows on from one signed in May 2003 with DEWA for a similar substation at Jebel Ali, which is currently under construction. The new substation at Jebel Ali is due to be completed in 24 months' time and the Bukadra substation in 18 months' time.
Marco Graziano, Vice-President for T&D in the region, said: "Our good performance in the design and construction of the first substation at Jebel Ali has led to us winning this second, and biggest ever, contract for AREVA T&D in the region. We have proved to our customer that we have the expertise in project management, products and systems to carry out such a complex substation project on time and to the complete satisfaction of our client."
