German power producers happy with NAP emissions deal

31 March 2004 - The German deal on emissions is a good compromise as it gives power industry more freedom for decisions, German producer association VDEW said.

But the VDEW said the details of the allocation plan had yet to be checked for their effects. The VDEW said the fact that the economy and environment ministry had set an emissions target by 2012 gave the industry more freedom to make decisions than the initial limits proposed by the environment ministry.

Germany already was an international example in the climate protection area, the VDEW said. "The successes made by the industry as yet through self-obligation are being taken into consideration by the NAP," said the VDEW. The group said it expected that all forms of power generation could continue to be used in the future.
