Power cuts tipped after deregulation

15 March 2004 - The Victorian electricity system will be fully deregulated from 1 January 2005.

The Victorian Essential Services Commission has a safety net to protect low-income consumers, but it could be severely tested when regulations change to allow electricity companies to choose which households they supply.

The Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) says up to 25 per cent of households could lose their power supplier, and the Energy Action Group says poorer households may have to pay a deposit to retain the service. Cath Smith, VCOSS CEO, says the Government must enact legislation immediately obliging power companies to supply gas and electricity at reasonable prices. Most Victorians have not benefited from the electricity privatization.
