East China province to ease power shortage

15 March 2004 - East China's Zhejiang Province, one of the country's leading economic powerhouses, has decided to invest CNY50bn (more than $6bn) in power plant and grid construction, in a bid to ease local power shortage by 2007.

Zhejiang is expected to generate 133bn kwh of electricity this year, 20bn kwh less than the estimated demand. The huge investment will be used in power plants with a combined installed capacity of 1.28m kW and a safe and environmentally friendly 500 kV power network.

The province has also simplified the procedures on the ratification of new power projects, speeding up local construction of power plants.
