Babcock & Wilcox's Easteel licensee completes 36 MW biomass-fired bubbling fluidized bed boiler

March 12, 2004 -- An industrial boiler licensee of The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W), Easteel Industries Limited (Easteel), has completed turnkey design, manufacture, civil, mechanical, structural, electrical, automation and installation of a 36-megawatt (thermal) biomass-fired B&W Towerpak® Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) boiler at a pulp and saw mill in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

The unit at Pan Pacific Forest Products (Pan Pac) Whirinaki's plant complex is the first use of BFB technology firing biomass fuels in New Zealand.

Pan Pac had a number of technical challenges to consider during its evaluation of the technology, particularly the selection of bed sand material and accompanying wet wood/pulp mill sludge fuel compatibility to ensure that the bed would remain fluidized during operation. Analysis of potential bed and fuel material compatibility was carried out by Easteel and B&W technical experts. The BFB unit was completed in late 2003.

The Babcock & Wilcox Company is an operating unit of McDermott International, Inc. (NYSE:MDR), a leading worldwide energy services company. B&W designs, manufactures, installs and provides products and services for steam-generating and environmental equipment for the electric utility, pulp and paper and industrial markets. The Babcock & Wilcox Company is headquartered in Barberton, Ohio, USA or can be viewed at www.babcock.com.
