Bruce 'A' nuclear generating station returns to service after 6 years

OAKVILLE, ON, Jan. 30, 2004 -- Bruce Power recently announced that Unit 3 at the company's Bruce A generating station was now reconnected to Ontario's electricity grid, bringing Bruce Power's ambitious project to restart two long-idled reactors to a close. Unit 4, also 750 MW, was restarted on October 7, 2003.

"This is the first time any company has started two CANDU units back-to-back," said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We take great pride in that accomplishment, which required all our combined skills and efforts."

A lead contributor to this massive and complex project was the consulting engineering team of Acres International and Sargent & Lundy LLC, and a third partner, fabricator and constructor, E.S. Fox Limited. As the main contractor, selected in June of 2001, the ASLF team was responsible for the design, management, and installation of modification projects. This work included upgrading to current standards, with special attention to safety in case of fire, seismic events, or power failure.

By the time both units were operational, this singular project had required the installation of nearly 60 kilometers of cable and over 200,000 electrical connections were made. At times the ASLF team had 450 different trades employed on site, with over 200 engineering and support staff in Tiverton, close to the plant, and at various other partnership offices.

Alan O'Brien, Project Manager of the Bruce A Restart Team, commented that "Despite the size of the project and rigorous standards of performance that had to be met, the work went smoothly and expeditiously. This is a testament not only to the Acres - Sargent & Lundy - Fox team, but also to our client, Bruce Power, who are to be congratulated for this major achievement."
