AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 22, 2004 -- Green Mountain Energy Co. announced it has been chosen by Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) as the renewable power supplier and marketer for FPL's new green pricing program.
The two companies are teaming up to offer this exclusive option to FPL's 3.6 million residential customers starting in mid-February. FPL is widely recognized as one of the country's premier power companies.
Green Mountain Energy Company will procure the renewable energy supply that FPL will offer to its Florida customers and will also provide marketing and sales support for the FPL renewable energy program. The two companies will jointly develop consumer education campaigns as well as in-market customer outreach initiatives.
The FPL green pricing program follows similar successful programs in which Green Mountain Energy Company works with utilities to offer their customers renewable energy choices.
Since choosing Green Mountain Energy Company as the supplier of their two new renewable options in December 2001, Pacific Power and Portland General Electric's (PGE) green pricing programs climbed further in the U.S Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) rankings (http://www.nrel.gov/news/press/2003/leading_greenpower.html) in terms of total participants than any other utilities on the list. Both utilities moved from the top ten to the top five.
During the 18-month period, the number of customers participating in the utilities' green power programs increased by more than 500 percent
"FPL selected Green Mountain Energy Company because they have a proven track record as a leader in the purchase and marketing of renewable power," said Bill Hamilton, vice president of customer service for FPL.
Customer research revealed that many of FPL's residential customers are interested in the company offering this type of program to support environmentally preferable electricity generation. "Offering green power to our customers is a great opportunity for FPL to further demonstrate support for renewable power and a sustainable environment. We are pleased to offer this program as a choice for customers who want to purchase cleaner energy," added Hamilton.
"Green Mountain Energy Company is pleased to be able to align itself with a forward-thinking, customer-focused company like FPL, which we see as a leader in supporting cleaner, renewable power options by voluntarily implementing its own green pricing program," said John Savage, senior vice president of marketing, for Green Mountain Energy Company. "This relationship allows our company to expand into another key state and supports an important aspect of our business strategy in which we work with utilities to help them develop, implement and grow their green pricing programs."
"We are excited to see FPL team up with Green Mountain Energy Company to give Florida consumers a real green power choice to do their part for the environment," said Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. "Green Mountain Energy Company has real world experience in consumer education and marketing green power. We look forward to having FPL and Green Mountain Energy Company help grow the southeast green power market."
FPL Group companies are recognized for their cleaner energy initiatives. Over the past decade, FPL, its principal subsidiary, has made voluntary reductions in plant emissions that have placed it among the lowest in the power industry in emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide. FPL Energy, its energy-generating subsidiary, produces 40 percent of the wind-generated electricity in the U.S. and is the world's largest supplier of wind-generated electricity.
