ALSTOM to refurbish hydro power stations in Scotland

Dec. 19, 2003 -- ALSTOM has been awarded two contracts by Scottish and Southern Energy for the turnkey refurbishment of Livishie and Cassley Hydro Power stations in Scotland. The combined value of these orders exceeds 17 million euros.

Livishie Power Station, situated beside Loch Ness, was originally commissioned in 1962 and comprises one unit of 15 MW. ALSTOM's scope of supply includes a new turbine runner, guide vanes, governing system and a new brushless exciter for the generator. The electrical and mechanical balance of plant will also be comprehensively refurbished. Work is scheduled for completion in December 2004.

Cassley Power Station, located on the shores of Loch Shin, was first commissioned in 1959. ALSTOM will supply two new horizontal Francis turbine generators units and balance of plant including protection and joint control systems. The new units, rated at 3.4 MW and 6.6 MW, are designed to improve the efficiency of the station. Work is scheduled for completion by January 2005.

ALSTOM's Hydro Systems unit in Rugby, UK, will manage both projects. Equipment will be supplied from the company's facilities in France, Spain, Germany and the UK.

The refurbishment of these two hydro power stations is part of Scottish and Southern Energy's plans to qualify for UK Government Renewable Energy Certificates.
