Dec. 16, 2003 -- The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens has secured a contract for the construction of a new turnkey combined cycle power plant at the BASF chemical plant in Antwerp, Belgium.
The purchaser is Zandvliet Power N.V., Antwerp, a joint venture of RWE Power, Essen and Electrabel S.A., Brussels. Zandvliet Power will use this new plant to supply power to the BASF facility in Antwerp. The order is worth approximately EUR 230 million.
The new natural gas fired power plant, which PG will construct at the BASF factory site in Antwerp operates on the basis of combined heat and power. The combined generation of power and steam means the plant will be able to achieve an energy efficiency of nearly 80 percent. This prevents unnecessary energy losses and reduces CO2 emissions, thereby providing an environmentally friendly power generation option.
The plant consisting of one block supplies approximately 400 megawatts of electricity and a maximum of approximately 300 tons of steam per hour to the production facilities of the chemical plant. The power plant is scheduled to be placed in service in August 2005.
The Siemens PG scope of supply comprises the turnkey power plant which will consist of one single-shaft gas turbine (type V94.3A) with one steam turbine and one generator, all mechanical equipment and components, including a heat recovery steam generator, natural draft cooling tower, as well as the electrical systems and equipment, the instrumentation and control systems (Teleperm XP), spare parts and an optional maintenance/service contract for the gas turbine.
"We are proud that the customer decided in favor of our concept. Building and integrating a complex power plant in an existing chemical plant while production continues is a real challenge that places great demands on all parties involved, primarily in terms of safety," said Ingo Paul, PG Sales Manager for Europe.
