BOISE, Idaho, Dec. 11, 2003 -- Washington Group International Inc. announced Thursday that it has been selected by Exelon Power, a unit of Exelon Corporation, as Engineer of Choice to provide engineering services over the next three years for its fossil-fueled and hydroelectric generating plants at sites in Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, and Illinois.
"This contract for engineering services in support of Exelon's fossil and hydroelectric fleet complements our existing services contract for its nuclear facilities," said Louis E. Pardi, president of Washington Group's Power Business Unit. "Exelon is important to our company, and we are delighted that we can play a correspondingly important role for Exelon as it strives to supply dependable power to its customers."
The contract includes two options for one-year extensions that could bring the total period to five years. Officials did not disclose the contract value.
Exelon's fossil plant portfolio consists of more than 10,000 megawatts of capacity produced using coal, oil, and natural gas. Its peak generation facilities provide more than 2,000 megawatts of supplementary power for use during high demand periods. Exelon's two hydroelectric stations along the Susquehanna River provide 1,607 megawatts of power.
Washington Group also provides engineering services for Exelon's 10 nuclear generating stations under an Engineer of Choice contract announced in August 2002.
