12 December 2003 - South Africa's electricity industry must move fast to replace ageing transmission lines to avoid the blackouts like those which hit parts of the US and Europe.
It quoted the National Electricity Regulator as saying cables in most parts of the country are more than 60 years.
Eskom, the state-owned electricity utility, has about 265 000 km of high-voltage cables and 500 000 km of distribution wires operated by itself and municipalities.
National Electricity Regulator chief executive Xolani Mkhwanazi said a stakeholders' working group will be in place by the beginning of 2004 to plan how to raise money to improve and replace ageing infrastructure.
