19 November 2003 - Ten bidders have expressed interest in the state's stake in the dominant Slovak power producer Slovenske Elektrarne (SE), Slovak Economy Minister Pavol Rusko announced last week.
The number of bidders topped expectations, according to Rusko. Interested parties include the dominant Czech power producer CEZ and the Russian firm RAO UES. Rusko did not identify the other bidders. He did confirm, however, that more than one bidder had expressed interest in SE as a whole, including its nuclear power division. Previous media reports suggested that CEZ was the only party interested in the whole company.
According to the Reuters news agency, RAO UES is also interested in SE as a whole. Reuters reports that other bidders, including the US firm AES, Italy's Enel and Germany's E.ON and RWE are only interested in SE's conventional energy divisions. Other media reports identify additional bidders as Britain's International Power, Austria's Verbund and Belgium's Electrabel.
The Slovak government launched the tender for SE on October 10. In addition to a 49 per cent stake in the firm, it is also offering managerial control. Bidders have until December 5 to state whether they are interested in the company as a whole, or only part of it.
SE runs two nuclear power stations, two coal-fired power stations and several hydroelectric plants. The company accounts for 85 per cent of Slovakia's electricity output.
