Abu Dhabi to expand power and water at Taweelah

11 November 2003 - Abu Dhabi's fifth independent water and power project (IWPP) will be the Taweelah B/C plant development and expansion, now that the Al Mirfa project is on hold, officials said yesterday.

International companies who had submitted their statements of qualifications have been informed by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) that it has been decided to expand the Taweelah B plant and build a new power and desalination plant called the Taweelah C.

The new plant to be developed, the Taweelah C, will have a power generating capacity of 1000 MW and 65 million gallons per day (gpd) of water. The existing Taweelah B plant has a power generation capacity of 1000 MW and 90 million gpd of water. "It has been decided to go ahead with the development of the Taweelah B and C. It is a combination of a brownfield and greenfield project," said an ADWEA spokesman.

The Taweelah B plant is the only fully government-owned cogeneration plant in the Taweelah complex. The Taweelah A2 and Taweelah A1 are now IWPPs being developed by international companies. At least 16 international companies submitted their statements of qualifications for the Al Mirfa and were awaiting the Request for Qualifications.
