Syria says Iran could join regional power grid

4 November 2003 - Syrian minister of electricity Munib Saim Al-Dahar said Iran could join the power network of six regional countries. The network includes Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq.

He told the IRNA news agency that Iran could join the power grid through Turkey. He further noted that the project would be completed when six regional countries would be eventually linked with the European grid through Turkey. He put the overall cost of the ongoing 6-state project at $600m.

The Syrian official said the results of linking up the power networks of Egypt, Jordan and Syria have been satisfactory during the last three years. He also noted that a Libyan offer to join the grid has been accepted in the meeting. The 9th rotatory meeting of electricity ministers of these countries was held in Damascus Sunday.

On behalf of Iraq, a Representative of the Iraqi power minister attended the
meeting.
