Federal-state agreement seeks better natural gas data

Oct. 30, 2003 -- As one part of a broad effort to improve the nation's natural gas supply data, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) has signed a new partnership agreement with the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC), which represents the 37 states that produce virtually all of the domestic oil and natural gas in the U.S.

The memorandum of understanding recognizes that the member States, which regulate and tax the production of oil and natural gas within their borders, possess a great deal of information about those industries, especially the production and consumption of natural gas.

EIA, as the nation's principal source of energy data, believes that closer cooperation with these States, through the IOGCC, can help to

* increase the timeliness and accuracy of the state- and national-level monthly natural gas production data estimates it publishes, and
* facilitate public access to these data on state and EIA web sites.

The agreement creates a joint EIA-IOGCC team that will establish mechanisms to promote these objectives. It will prepare periodic progress reports, and major findings and accomplishments will be announced in forthcoming press releases.

The agreement, signed on October 20, 2003, by Governors John Hoeven of North Dakota and Frank Murkowski of Alaska, IOGCC Vice Chairman Lynn Helms, and EIA Administrator Guy Caruso is available on the EIA Web site at:
