27 October 2004 - Austria's VA TECH Transmission & Distribution (VA Tech) has won an €8m ($9.4m) contract for turnkey switchgear and civil work at Weinstrom's Donaustadt power plant in Vienna.
The scope of supply includes a 110 kV indoor switchgear (GIS), secondary systems for controlling the switching equipment plus all auxiliary units required, the erection of the building housing the switching system as well as the integration of the switching system into the existing 110 kV grid and the power plant.
The Donaustadt substation provides for the connection of Vienna's second major power plant to the grid of Weinstrom utility. An increase in power demand required a substantial expansion of the feeder line, which has caused the existing outdoor switchyard to operate at the limits of its capacity. Similarly to Weinstrom's Vienna North substation, the new compact GIS TH7m switchgear will be installed also at the Donaustadt facility.
There is a timeframe of only nine weeks for integrating the new 110 kV switchgear of Donaustadt power plant into the Weinstrom grid in the summer of 2004, when unit 3 will be taken out of service for maintenance.
The new switchgear has been scheduled to commence operation in September 2004.
