Oct. 13, 2003 -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) announced Monday that Unit 2 of the Beaver Valley Power Station returned to service on Sunday, October 12, following a 28-day scheduled refueling.
At 9:00 a.m. Monday, the unit was operating at approximately 40 percent power. Power levels will vary over the next several days as part of routine testing until full operating power of 873 megawatts is achieved.
Significant activities included the replacement of 60 fuel assemblies and 48 control rods in the reactor core, as well as other modifications and improvements to ensure continued safe and reliable operation.
The Unit 2 reactor vessel head and under-vessel were found to be in good condition following a thorough inspection.
Unit 2 had operated for 474 consecutive days since its last refueling and had posted an availability factor of 99.6 percent.
Beaver Valley is owned by the Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE - News), and is operated by FirstEnergy's FENOC subsidiary. FirstEnergy is a registered public utility holding company.
