8 October 2003 - Austria's VA Tech Transmission & Distribution (VA Tech T&D) has won the contract for a new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Project at the Kudankulam Power Plant in India worth €25m ($29.5m).
The scope of the contract includes eighteen (18) Indoor Switchgear (GIS) bays and when commissioned in 2006, the 2000 MW Power Plant will improve the quality of life of the people in the southern part of India by electrification of villages, as well as development of irrigation facilities, improvement of drinking water supply and also development of industry.
The Kudankulam Project is part of a programme to develop and increase the generation of electricity in India.
This new order for Kudankulam GIS confirms VA Tech T&D's strong position as a supplier to Indian energy supply companies demanding a high level of quality and reliability of equipment in view of continuity of energy supply.
This is the second GIS plant VA Tech has supplied in India for NPCIL, having previously been awarded of the GIS for the Tarapur Power Plant in 2001.
