Egyptian electricity company awards Alcatel a €16m telecommunications contract

6 October 2003 - Alcatel has announced that it has been selected by EETC (Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company) to provide a full turnkey telecommunications network and associated services for their internal communication needs.

The €16m ($18.7m) contract fits in the frame of EETC's main objective to provide telecommunications to serve the electricity transmission system in a secure and redundant way throughout the Western Nile delta area in Egypt.

The project will provide high-speed data and voice links between High Voltage Substations and the WDRCC (West Delta Regional Control Center) which monitors power delivery throughout the relevant power network. Alcatel will be responsible for designing, building and commissioning a multi-service communication system equipped with about 1000 km of aerial fibre optic cables and a network of Alcatel OmniPCX Enterprise communication servers. The main transmission system relies on Alcatel's data-aware SDH Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems and will be managed by Alcatel's integrated network management system that ensures an efficient and cost-effective traffic control and routing throughout all network levels.

"The contracted carrier-class telecommunications network should provide EETC with a fully efficient and redundant data & voice transmission that perfectly satisfies the needs for the supervisory control and data acquisition functions by the WDRCC, targeting fewer power network disturbances and shorter outage durations which will result in more sustained energy supply over the network", said Eng. Ahmed RA'AFAT, Executive Board Member - North Region of EETC. "EETC has selected Alcatel for this project because of their integration skills, expertise in managing large network deployments and their local presence in Egypt."

"Delivering a turnkey solution for EETC, Alcatel will assume complete responsibility for the project enabling EETC to focus on timely and securely meeting the power transmission demands," said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel's integration and services activities. "This project demonstrates once again our strong capability to provide optimised integrated communications solutions tailored to support specific mission critical business applications. It also highlights our ability to serve the energy market."
